Fallout New Vegas: guide to the best mods

Since the Fallout saga has landed in the third dimension we have been lucky enough to be able to interact with four different video games. Some of these are still to be remembered today as some of the best RPGs ever, others we hope to forget them much faster than one might commonly think.

Fallout New Vegas it fully belongs to the very first of these two categories, boasting a large number of technical problems and a writing capable of making us overlook each of them. The title, made by those geniuses of Obsidian, is a video game full of wonderful quests, magnificent characters and featuring a world building capable of giving players and post apocalyptic fans goosebumps over and over again.

Like any Bethesda video game, the title is still played today thanks to a very special feature: it is moddable.
It is moddable and is supported by a community that breathes creativity. Over the last ten years the title has been enhanced and improved in many different ways, even coming to global mods for new stories and new worlds.

Let's see together which are the most interesting mods to install on your computer, together with which are the most interesting ones for a purely technical discourse.

NMCs Texture Pack For New Vegas

Fallout New Vegas: guide to the best mods

Let's start immediately with a mod that will delight geeks and gamers who want top graphics for their video game.

THE NMC Texture Pack For New Vegas is a pack of high resolution textures (compared to those of the original game, mind you) able to greatly enhance the visual impact of the title of Bethesda and Obsidian.

In practice, this mod changes a huge number of textures compared to the original game. These changes include:

  • roads
  • Landscapes
  • Trees (i.e. trunks and branches with brand new textures)
  • vehicles
  • Building
  • interior
  • Medium / large sized items (Nuke cola dispensers, tables, cardboard boxes, etc.)

In order to use this mod to its full potential, however, it is mandatory to use a tool, a mod, called FNV 4GB Patcher which allows the engine to exploit large amounts of ram.

This mod has different degrees of changes depending on the performance of your PC and allows gamers to visually update the title to become pleasant even at resolutions unthinkable at the time.

Weapon Mods Expanded

Fallout New Vegas: guide to the best mods

Weapon Mods Expanded o WMX for friends is the name of a series of modifications that completely change the arsenal that can be found within the obsidian title, modifying the statistics and the usefulness of the weapons that we find in the game.

The mod is the Enhanced and refined version of an identically named mod that also exists on Fallout 3. According to the modder Obsidian herself, for the weapon modification system in New Vegas, she took inspiration from her project and to thank them she decided to take that system to new extremes.

In essence WMX do this to the game:

  • All the weapons in the game can be modified through the use of three slots for various accessories.
  • Unique weapons can also be modified through these three slots.
  • Some of the modifications present in the base game have remained unchanged within this mod.
  • Some accessories can be applied to multiple weapons at the same time
  • New craftable accessories also for non-tech weapons (such as melee)
  • Create "common" versions of unique weapons with lowered stats but identical gunplay
  • Completely new assets for most of the weapons in the game.
  • Possibility to find weapon accessories inside the loot
  • Markets sell weapon accessories
  • Bug fixes and other issues related to the texture or appearance of weapons.

In addition to this it is important to note that the mod is compatible with a long list of weapon packages that can always be found on the net. It will be possible to modify the weapons coming from other mods or even modify the exclusive ones to a famous mega mod which we will talk about in a few paragraphs.

Project Nevada

Fallout New Vegas: guide to the best mods

Project Nevada is one of the biggest and most chubby mods of all the custom paranorama of the Obsidian title and is a package composed of thematic modules that aim to make the experience more interesting and deeper. To do this, the mod touches five specific points, modifying their parameters and improving their characteristics in order to take the title to peaks not touched before.

The first point, called Core module is the foundation of the project and significantly improves the actual gameplay of Fallout New Vegas. Within the core module there are quality of life improvements or major gameplay changes.

Sons of this module are the presence of the quick button for grenades, the bullet time or the possibility for your character to shoot. All these features have been rewritten from scratch in order to integrate within the best VATS such as bullet time or other wonders. To these must be added many other functions: dynamic sights, customization options and dozens of other small improvements. All of these can be turned on or off manually.

The other modules, not essential for the new experience, are the following:

  • cyberware: the module in question adds to the title a whole series of upgrades and technological improvements. These improvements include bionic legs for faster running or wider vision modes for when moving with a helmet from the power armor. This module includes its own interface for managing and balancing the various cybernetic modules.
  • Rebalance: the module in question is concerned with offering the player a series of levers and regulators in order to obtain the desired challenge from the game. This module is a direct child of Fallout 3 Wanderer's Edition and allows the player to change the difficulty or adjust it according to their taste with ease of use and balance.
  • Facilities: the module in question is concerned with adding a wide range of new weapons and armor to the title. Many of these objects have been created from scratch for the product and are all children of other creatives linked to the world of modding. The aforementioned WMX mod is compatible with this module, offering incredible customization possibilities to the player. By activating the module, the player will be able to find the various new weapons in the loot or at the merchants, all with a balance that reflects that of the original game.
