17 years ago EA started printing Freedom Fighters, TPS developed by IO Interactive for PC, GameCube, PS2 and Xbox. The good success of critics and audiences gave hope for a sequel, which however never materialized. Until now.
Freedom Fighters uses the concept of uchronia to imagine a world in which the Soviet Union invaded and conquered the United States. As members of the resistance, you must try to repel the occupying forces through missions that involve team action, by issuing some key commands to your fellow soldiers. In 2005, IO Interactive announced that it was working on a new IP (Kane&Lynch) and hopes of seeing a new chapter of Freedom Fighters faded. However, when the studio gained independence from Square-Enix in 2017, it also brought with it the rights to the brand. However, even that action did not follow anything concrete, given that the software house was already fully committed to the development of the recent Hitman titles (Hitman 2 came out in 2018 and Hitman 3 is scheduled for next year). But now something finally seems to be moving.
User dex3108, of the gaming forums ResetEra platform, reported the attribution to the game of a new PEGI 16 classification for PC. Since the classified title is exactly the original, we are perhaps in the process of a re-release on PC, which it does from forerunner for the announcement of the development of a new chapter? On the other hand, the release date, set just today, is of little significance. This is probably a placeholder, given that the game has not appeared in any digital store, for the moment.
The game has never been available digitally until now, so it makes perfect sense that I want to replace it on the market to scrape together a few bucks. However, what interest could a game from 17 years ago have in today's audience? Very little, unless it was accompanied by the news of an upcoming sequel, or by the fact that it reappears in a renewed guise, some form of remastering or remake.
