A few days after its arrival on the market, which we remind you to be scheduled for March 10, Nintendo Italy has invited us to try the multiplayer modes of Mario Sports Superstars in their offices. In order to give a better judgment, not being able to use the title we are testing for the review online at the moment. The latest effort by the guys from Camelot and the big N for 3DS is a collection of five disciplines among the best seen starring Mario and all his friends, with a pinch of more interactivity thanks to amiibo cards and finally adequate online modes to those of home consoles.
Five games for the price of one
It would be too simplistic to think that we will be faced with a game with a handful of miniatures of other sports titles with Mario seen in the past, each discipline is in fact made up of a real title in itself, with a well thought out gameplay and rich that in many cases some videogame company would sell separately. The football could not miss it and mindful of the beautiful afternoons spent on Gamecube we were pleasantly struck by how much deeper it is in the past, we are certainly not at the level of a FIFA but on the fun and immediacy the cup brings it home. As in all the titles present we will have at our disposal the possibility to choose whether to face individual leagues for the single player or jump into the multiplayer both online and local, the latter however requires all players to have the game. Once the two protagonists of our team have been selected, the goalkeeper and the rest of the players from a predefined selection, each characterized by specific attributes, we will be able to take the field and appreciate the control system from the very beginning. In fact, we sharpen the sprint and the dorsal to call the teammate closest to the ball in the defensive phase, but also fast passes, through passes and the classic shot to charge, which being in a Mario game can also be in a super version in Holly & Benji style. Our matches took place in the two-on-two mode, leading to very frenetic matches but, given the naturalness of the controls, extremely satisfying.
even the tennis has the same mechanics based on the choice of our favorite hero, with the difference that here we will find ourselves with a whole series of special shots available in addition to the classic shots ranging from lob to damped, without counting the jump one and all the mechanics that made the title from which it takes its cue famous. It goes without saying that the matches in this case are for one as well maximum of four players and that harmony and strategy are essential to bring home the various sets, thus avoiding everyone running towards the ball. It must be emphasized how this is one of the most successful disciplines ever and that given the depth and fun experienced playing with others, even the one we bet will be more used with friends.
Horseback riding it is a totally new discipline, the one that from the name and at first sight inspired everyone less, but it is also the one that allows you to play up to 6 players at the same time in what are real horse races. The programmers have focused a lot on giving depth to this sport thanks to the presence of horses and the attributes and mood that characterizes them, in fact, it will not be enough to choose the one that will seem most similar to the character chosen by us, but it will be essential that the foal is in excellent shape, which in the single player section we will be able to influence us given the minigame that will see us busy taking care of our horse favorite as in a classic Nintendogs.
Golf and baseball they are instead more technical and less user friendly than the previous ones, both because we are really faced with all the game options that we find in Mario Golf and for baseball which requires a lot of effort to understand the perfect functioning of the serve. In both cases it is imperative to underline how the level of challenge is even higher and the matches with colleagues have been more competitive, demonstrating how it was necessary to concentrate more in order to try to win.
A possible winning five
We must say that we certainly spent an afternoon of fun and laughter during our test, a sign that Mario Sports Superstars succeeds in its intent to propose a multiplayer mode at the height and among the best available on 3DS. The doubts remain on the servers, since the test was local, but as of now we can say that the selection of the five disciplines is careful and varied, suitable for everyone. The single player counterpart and the role of the cards are not to be forgotten, on the contrary, but to have a definitive judgment you will have to wait for the complete review, for the moment if you have the Nintendo laptop we advise you to follow our pages to see if the positive sensations try will materialize or not.
