Sony clarifies the backward compatibility of Playstation 5

During the not particularly exciting presentation of the technical characteristics of Playstation 5, Marc Cerny revealed some (confusing) data on the backward compatibility of the new flagship console of Sony.

According to him, almost all of the 100 best-selling and played PS4 games would have been compatible, at launch, with the new console. This obviously did not satisfy the installed base of Playstation, currently huge in size and with libraries that can easily miss famous titles like the ones cited by Cerny.

To run for cover, the Japanese giant released a press release on Friday with some more information.

Backward compatibility… in stages!

Sony clarifies the backward compatibility of Playstation 5

Sony's statement, made by Hideaki Nishino within the Playstation Blog, it reports the following information.

We believe that the absolute majority of the four thousand video games running on Playstation 4 will also be playable on Playstation 5 at some point in his life. Talking about the one hundred best-selling games as certainly compatible was just a preview, let's take a little look at how we are moving at the development level.

The backward compatibility of Playstation appears to be similar, in some ways, to the backward compatibility plus of Xbox One e X series. The video games that will run on Playstation will be able to take advantage of the higher frequencies of the new console and will have the ability to run at higher framerates and better resolutions.

Sony is currently evaluating compatible video games title by title in order to do a painstaking and error-free job. The company has tested thousands of games at the moment and will do so until the launch of the console, during the last months of 2020.

More information will come in the coming months, we always read on Playstation Blog.

During the presentation on Wednesday, Marc Cerny (who does the work of the Lead Architect Designer, we want to remember) explained that the backward compatibility is given by the presence of many of the circuits that are already present on Playstation 4 and Playstation 4 Pro.

It is not a question of real emulation but something more akin to running old video games on higher powered computers.

During the conference no information was released on the compatibility of the console with its older machines such as Playstation 3 o Play Station. This is in stark contrast to the promises made by Microsoft, which is considered ready to offer a backward compatibility that travels for four generations with the possibility of improving the technical level of tens of years old video games.

Will Sony's strategy pay off in any way? How many of the new players will be dissatisfied with the lack of backward compatibility with previous consoles?
