[Spoiler] Kingdom Hearts 3 Secret Movie Analysis

Even before the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 Nomura confirmed the presence of a secret ending, as happens for every chapter of the series. In this article we will analyze every single aspect of the video and make our guesses as to its meaning.

Obviously the content of this article contains a large number of spoilers, so we recommend reading only to those who have completed Kingdom Hearts 3.

Kingdom Hearts 3, analysis of the secret movie "Yozora"

The secret cinematic can be unlocked by collecting the lucky charms. The number needed is different in based on the chosen game difficulty: the higher this will be, the less will be the necessary portfolios.

The movie has an overall duration two minutes. Apparently it is very confusing but analyzing it well we can see not a few references not only to the Kingdom Hearts saga but also to other works by Square-Enix.

Sora and Riku wake up in… Tokyo?

Sora and Riku wake up in an unknown place: they find themselves in two different points of an immense metropolis with traffic lights, cars and huge buildings. In the Sora location, the buildings are very reminiscent of those of Shibuya, a very famous district of the city of Tokyo. It is generally a very busy place as the whole neighborhood was built around the Shibuya station; from what we can see in the trailer instead we find ourselves with a completely deserted area.

Riku wakes up in another neighborhood that resembles Shinjuku from the buildings. In several frames of the trailer we can see the government building (the one with the two towers).

Two new mysterious individuals

Later the scene shifts to Riku to the roof of the government building where a mysterious boy with eyes of two different colors which, by the way, is very reminiscent Noctis of Final Fantasy XV (although to be honest much more the version of the first Versus XIII trailers) fixes the city with a pensive and melancholy gaze.

Another individual, from a different unidentified point in the city, stares at the moon and draws with his hands the silhouette of a heart. Kingdom Hearts reference. The trailer ends with the very famous slogan “Reconnect. KINGDOM HEARTS. "

What version of Tokyo are we in?

The city of Tokyo shown in the trailer is very loyal to its real-life counterpart, albeit completely deserted. Paying a little attention among the various buildings, we note an interesting detail: there is a circular tower with a neon sign that reads "104". The same tower also appears in another Square Enix video game: The Worlds Ends With You.

This is a Nintendo DS title released in 2008 developed by the same team from Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Also in this game the protagonist named Neku mysteriously awakens at the Shibuya intersection. He will later discover that he is in a parallel version of the city and that he is dead. The only way home is survive the Reaper Game for a week, a battle against strange creatures called Noises and Reapers. To do this, he must necessarily ally himself with a partner: a mysterious girl named Shiki Misaki.

Is Kingdom Hearts therefore connected to The World Ends With You?

If we think about it, so does Sora and Riku mysteriously awaken in two Tokyo neighborhoods. In particular, Sora wakes up right at a Shibuya intersection. The neon sign "104" could not have been inserted randomly: the two boys are surely found in the same parallel town as Neku.

This hypothesis is supported by the fact that Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You are already linked in the Middle City of Kingdom Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance. In this chapter Sora and Riku meet Neku and the co-stars of TWEWY.

Maybe, after the epilogue of Kingdom Hearts 3, Sora wakes up right in the parallel Shibuya and Riku decides to join him to be his partner in the Reaper Game.

Yozora: the links with Verum Rex and Final Fantasy Versus XIII

The world of Toy Story is introduced with a trailer for a fictional video game called Verum Rex. The game world and the appearance of the protagonists are really very similar to what was seen in the trailers of the very first versions of Final Fantasy XV which at the time was still called Verses XIII.

The development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII proceeded in parallel with that of the original XIII. However, the project, led by Tetsuya Nomura, was postponed several times to such an extent that it was suspected of being canceled. In 2013 the "rebirth" of the project was announced with the name of "Final Fantasy XV". On this occasion it was announced however also abandonment by the good Nomura.

The movie in the world of Toy Story seemed simply a tribute to Versus XIII, with no narrative connection. We note, however, that in the secret ending the same guy from the Verum Rex trailer appears. Also in the world of toys we learn from Rex that the boy is called Yozora and, coincidentally, the name of the secret movie is “Yozora”.

The name is not accidental: in Japanese it means "night sky" which in Latin translates as Night's Sky (name of the protagonist of Final Fantasy XV). If desired, it is possible to draw a parallel with the meaning of the name "Sora", a word that in Japanese means "sky".

Unfortunately we have no other information on the identity of this heterochromatic character; we are dealing with a an ally or an enemy of Sora and Riku?

We also noticed that the soundtrack we hear in the trailer is a mix between that of the secret ending of the first Kingdom Hearts and the trailer of Versus XIII.

The identity of the hooded guy

As for the second mystery character, the hooded dude, his identity remains shrouded in mystery. We know that he too is intent on summoning Kingdom Hearts. It could be the Master of Masters, also trapped in the limbo of parallel Tokyo.

Obviously, those in this article are all assumptions. Nomura was very skilled in writing Kingdom Hearts lore giving us breathtaking plot twists. At the time of the secret trailer for Kingdom Hearts II, the one on Birth By Sleep, many theories and hypotheses turned out to be wrong. Ergo, for the next game in the saga, let's expect everything.
