Disney Infinity 3.0 – Recensione

Article by Samuele Zaboi

Since the announcement of Disney's acquisition of LucasFilm (and related Star Wars rights) approximately three years ago, fans of Disney Infinity have been waiting for this moment: the arrival of the characters of Star Wars in the famous videogame series of the house of Mickey Mouse. The genre of toys-to-life video games, if we can speak of a genre, has gained more and more success since the appearance on the market of the Skylanders figurines with other companies that have followed this trail such as Nintendo and LEGO and of course Disney.

Third level evolution

The arrival of Disney Infinity 3.0 was surrounded by an aura of extreme curiosity, to understand if the series would finally be able to make that decisive step towards maturity, moving away from that aura and from the (perhaps unjustified) reputation of being a video game created only for children or for a audience of more young people. The game, starting from what has already been shown in the past, is able to offer a disproportionate amount of content, impossible to manage by a single developer studio and it is for this reason that Disney has relied on as many as 8 teams of collaborators including Ninja Theory (for the combat system) and Sumo Digital (for the driving sessions).

As already known and already mentioned in the presentation, after the heroes Avengers and Marvel, the Disney classics and some of the characters taken from Pixar (including the wonderful statuettes dedicated to new movie Inside Out), with Disney Infinity 3.0 it's finally time for Star Wars and its favorites while there is no lack of the characteristic Toy Box mode and the new starter packs, with the one available at launch entitled "Twilight of the Republic" with the statuettes of Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano, but let's proceed in order.

Space for creativity

The Toy Box of Disney Infinity 3.0 offers several innovations compared to what was seen with the previous title, allowing players to give ample space to their creativity and their imagination. The number of helpers has increased and as always it will be possible to build roads, buildings, strongholds or, why not, even hidden levels within these creations, all taking inspiration from the vast Disney worlds. Despite an interface that has remained too much in the past, with few innovations that have not simplified its use, the amount of content offered by the Toy Box is decidedly immense, to the point that the most inexperienced with the world of editors or the younger audiences will struggle to exploit all the means made available to them. At the same time, however, for those who do not have the desire to dive headlong into the editor of the Toy Box, there is always the possibility of accessing the many online contents created by the other toys. with sometimes really surprising results, capable of reaching astounding levels and of the highest quality. Once again, however, we find ourselves faced with the impossibility of cross-over between the different Disney worlds: this component considerably limits the freedom available to users even if, as already widely emphasized, this remains decidedly at the highest levels for the series. .

In the world of Star Wars

The starter pack of Disney Infinity 3.0 allows you to catapult yourself into the world of Star Wars (not a random choice by Disney considering the upcoming arrival of the seventh chapter of the film saga) with the Twilight of the Republic scenario. On this occasion it is possible to meet the combat system designed for the game and created by Ninja Theory. Alongside a level suitable for smaller players, the developers have improved the combat system by layering it more than in the past by combining a good variety of moves with combos of different genres, all surrounded by a fairly deep skill tree.

One of the major innovations offered by Disney Infinity 3.0 it also concerns the vastness and the realization of the game environments: thanks to this staret pack it will be possible to have access to four fully explorable planets (Coruscant, Geonosis, Naboo and Tatooine), all reachable through space travel. The longevity of the Twilight of the Republic is expected to be around 5 hours, all seasoned also by secondary missions present, among other things, during the movement from one planet to another.

Perfection is still a long way off

The steps forward made by Disney Infinity 3.0 they are considerable and visibly notable even if perfection is still far away for the third installment of the series created by Avalanche Software. Having to develop the game also for the consoles of the past generation has inevitably put a brake on the graphic and general level of the software which thus cannot fully exploit the power made available by PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In addition to this, there are some annoying technical imperfections even if you are far from the gaps faced with the first Disney Infinity.

Having to manage such a vast and constantly increasing amount of content with the arrival of new Play Sets must not have facilitated the work in any way and, taking this reason into consideration, there is no doubt that Disney Infinity 3.0 is the best installment in the series so far.

Final comments

Disney Infinity 3.0 it's the right step forward this series needed. Still far from perfection, the title manages to offer a considerable amount of content managing to embrace all audiences, from the youngest players to the most experienced users but still linked to the Disney world and its infinite possibilities. The long-awaited arrival of the characters of Star Wars is to be considered as the icing on the cake, but the starting point for the continuation of the series.
